About the Department

The Illinois State University Physics Department offers nationally recognized degree sequences for undergraduate physics majors. The Illinois State Physics Department is small enough to provide individualized attention, yet big enough to deliver large-university opportunities.  The department encourages strong faculty-student interactions with its 10:1 student to faculty ratio.  We currently average 130 physics majors with 18 graduates per year, which places us in the top 10 out of over 500 undergraduate-only programs in the nation.

Careers

The possible career paths one has after obtaining a physics degree at ISU are numerous. Some students choose to pursue advanced degrees in physics, engineering, or other subfield of science; some go directly to work in high schools, technology firms, or in industry; and some have gone on to practice law or medicine. A degree in physics provides a solid foundation that leads to many career paths.
